Swiss Art in the 21^st Century

The New Collection Catalogue

The new collection catalogue “Schweizer Kunst im 21. Jahrhundert – Die Sammlung Nationale Suisse” (“Swiss Art in the 21^st Century – The Nationale Suisse Collection”) complements the first volume, which was published in 2005 and lists all the works acquired for the art collection from its establishment in 1943 through to 2000. The second volume opens a new chapter in the collection’s history.

The 144-page catalogue of the collection offers a complete scholarly account of the works acquired between 2000 and 2011. The foreword by Hans Künzle opens the publication with an explanation of the self-understanding which is a feature of Nationale Suisse’s commitment to art.

The curators of the Nationale Suisse Collection comment on the history, development and concept of the collection and explain the phenomenon of ‘corporate collecting’, which has become increasingly widespread since the 1990s. They also draw attention to the further development of the collection through the Nationale Suisse Art Prize that supports young artists.

In addition to the complete inventory with short biographies, critical appraisals and bibliographical references, 32 works are examined in greater detail: art historians discuss exemplary works from all the styles represented and provide background information to put the works in context.
