Press Release

Roger Federer names his own locomotive

28.10.2011

At midday today, Roger Federer, brand ambassador for Nationale Suisse, named the Nationale Suisse locomotive at Basel’s freight terminal. Not only is the global tennis star lending his name and image to the train, he also embodies the corporate values of the Swiss insurer: ‘personal, successful and caring’.

In use for Swiss domestic passenger services for the last month, the Nationale Suisse locomotive was officially named at midday today in Basel. The naming ceremony was performed by tennis ace Roger Federer. For Federer too, the ceremony was a special experience: ‘I have never named a locomotive before, let alone one bearing my own name.’ He says that he is particularly pleased that, for every kilometre travelled by the locomotive, Nationale Suisse will make a contribution to the Roger Federer Foundation in Africa.

Close connection with the railway network
As one of the principle insurers of the construction site for the Gotthard Base Tunnel, the longest rail tunnel in the world, Nationale Suisse has been closely connected with the Swiss railway network for more than ten years. ‘With the Nationale Suisse locomotive, we want to put our stamp on this unique project’, said Hans Künzle, CEO of Nationale Suisse, in his address at the naming ceremony. The construction of the Gotthard Base Tunnel, he added, was not only a milestone in the history of Swiss transport, but also for Nationale Suisse, which is applying its many years of experience in engineering insurance to the Gotthard Tunnel project.

On the move with Roger Federer
Over the next few years, the Nationale Suisse locomotive will be used on a regular basis for domestic passenger services. Jeannine Pilloud, Head of the Passenger Division at SBB, is delighted with the new-look locomotive and the collaboration with Nationale Suisse: ‘Our passengers are world champions in rail travel. Now they can look forward to meeting Roger Federer, the best tennis player of all time, on all inter-city routes.’
