The Gotthard Base Tunnel

History is being written once again at the Gotthard. The breakthrough in the longest tunnel in the world was achieved in October 2010 – in 2017 the first trains should be travelling through it. Nationale Suisse has been entrusted with insuring the building sites of this project of the century - a milestone in the history of transport in Switzerland.

On 15th October 2010 at 2 p.m., after 14 years of construction work, the last piece of rock was bored out by the tunnel-drilling machine: And with this, the breakthrough of the east tube of the Gotthard base tunnel was achieved. An event that caught people’s attention the world over – because the new, dual tunnel, with its 57 km, is the longest in the world. The new railway link through the alps (NRLA) is one of the most impressive construction projects of the 21^st century. It connects Northern and Southern Europe and significantly reduces transfer times. The Gotthard base tunnel is the cornerstone of the project and it is insured by Nationale Suisse.

A Superlative Object of Insurance

Nationale Suisse, in collaboration with an internationally renowned insurance company specialised in construction site insurance, is responsible for the AlpTransit Gotthard AG (as well as for the Ceneri base tunnel). The two companies are sharing the entire risk, fifty - fifty, over the period of 2000 to 2017.
